Areas of our state are experiencing record snow falls! The obvious difficulties of dealing with that much snow are missed work and school, endless shoveling, and making sure your heat stays on. Something a lot of people will start to deal with more are frozen pipes. This means they won’t have running water in their homes, adding to the difficulties of dealing with massive amounts of snow. Our team has tips for keeping your plumbing from freezing up in a Suffolk County NY winter:
- Turn up the heat. If you still have heat in your home, turn it up. It may not be the most environmentally or budget friendly solution, but it will be cheaper in the long run versus fixing a burst pipe. If you don’t have heat in your home, place a space heater near your pipes. Don’t worry about getting them hot; they just need to be warm enough to keep water from freezing.
- Open up cupboard doors. This will allow heat to get to the pipes under counters in your sink and bathroom and prevent them from freezing.
- Let a little cold water drip from your faucets. Even a tiny amount of water moving through the pipes will help prevent them from freezing.
- If you think there is a good chance your pipes are going to freeze, turn off your water. That way if a pipe bursts, it will only leak that water inside of the pipe and won’t be a continuous flow.
If your pipes do freeze, give our plumbing team in Suffolk County NY a call! We’ll help you unfreeze your pipes and repair any damage that’s been done. Stay warm this winter and call us if you have any issues!
