Let’s face it, we have all probably flushed something down the toilet or drain that we shouldn’t have. While many homeowners think that it is not a big deal, what you
flush down the toilet or drain can actually have a huge impact on not only your plumbing system, but on the water supply, as well. As plumbers in Long Island, NY, we have seen almost everything when it comes to items stuck in the drain and we have decided to put together a list of certain items that should never make their way down your drain or your toilet.
Okay, ladies, while many of you have caught on to this, there are still plenty of women who continue to flush their feminine hygiene products down the toilet. Feminine hygiene products should never be flushed down the toilet. They often clog up pipes and cause problems for sewage pumps. Many of these products are biodegradable, however, that does not mean they can be flushed down the toilet. It simply means that they will degrade at some point.
The only paper product that should ever be flushed down your toilet is toilet paper. All other paper products should be thrown away. Although many paper products and wipes claim to be biodegradable, like feminine products, this does not mean that they should be flushed down the toilet. Whether it is tissue or baby wipes, these products should always be thrown away.
Chemicals and Medications
While harmful chemicals and pharmaceutical products do not necessarily cause blockages, they should still never be flushed down the drain or the toilet. Chemicals such as paint, pesticides, or other products contaminate our water supply and it can be very difficult to filter these items out. These items should be properly and carefully disposed of.
